A retired soldier has been arrested by police investigating the murder of a man with learning difficulties in 1974.

John Pat Cunningham, 27, was shot dead as he fled from an army patrol near Benburb, County Armagh, on June 15, 1974.

A 73-year-old retired British soldier was arrested in England and is currently being questioned at Antrim Serious Crime Suite.

It is believed that Mr Cunningham ran from the patrol when he saw the soldiers on the Carrickaness Road.

Mr Cunningham had a fear of people in uniform, and soldiers in particular.

The case was recently re-opened by the PSNI following the re-examination of evidence.
