There is a major rescue effort underway in the seas off Baltimore in West Cork after three people were apparently swept into the water by a wave.

It is believed two men and a woman were at the beacon just outside the town when the female was swept into the sea just after 6pm this evening. The two males attempted to rescue her and were also dragged into the water.

A man and the woman were rescued from the water and are both in a serious condition, but the other man is still unaccounted for.

The Irish Coastguard and lifeboats from local communities are currently sweeping the area and an Irish Coastguard helicopter is in place to airlift the casualties.

It is believed that all three are from Cork county.
