THE Real IRA has threatened to “paint the streets red with blood” after a republican with close links to Alan Ryan was injured in a knife attack in Dublin.

The 25-year-old, who has previously been warned by gardai there is a threat on his life, was slashed in the face in the attack on Parnell Street in the city centre yesterday.

He was walking with a 24-year-old woman at the time of the attack. She was not injured.

He was taken to hospital where he is receiving treatment for his injuries, described as non life-threatening.

The victim made his way to Temple St Children's hospital and was transferred by ambulance shortly afterwards to the Mater.

No arrests have been made at this stage and the scene was preserved for a technical examintaion

Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Parnell Sq North between the 3.50pm and 4.10pm and who may have seen any unusual activity to contact Mountjoy on 01 6668600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Republicans have vowed to take revenge for the attack in a statement sent to media this afternoon.  The statement also claims a newly regrouped faction of the Real IRA has broken away from the leadership of the so-called New IRA which took control following Alan Ryan’s death in 2012.

Many of Ryan’s associates were booted out by the leadership of the New IRA following his murder.

The statement said: “The Real IRA have sworn to paint the streets red with the blood of the crime gang that attacked and nearly killed this well-known republican they have also sworn to flush out members of the so called New I.R.A that have been passing information onto this crime gang about republicans.

“Republican groups up and down the country have lost total confidence in the New I.R.A because of their links to criminality and there utter cowardly failure to address to murder of republican Alan Ryan.

"The R.I.R.A in The North of Ireland and Dublin have regrouped and have amassed a stockpile of weapons that will be used against the crime gang that have been responsible for the murder of Alan Ryan and the Attacks on republicans.”

Associates of the gang responsible for Alan Ryan’s murder are believed to have been responsible for the knife attack.

The leader of that gang has also been warned by gardai his life is under threat from associates of Ryan.
