A 7.4-magnitude earthquake has struck near Christchurch, New Zealand, according to the US Geological Survey.

Christchurch is the biggest city on New Zealand's South Island.

A 6.3 quake there in February 2011 killed 185 people and caused widespread damage.

New Zealand Civil Defence just tweeted that it is "assessing [the] situation with assistance of scientific advisors and civil defence groups".

There are reports that houses in Cheviot, near where the quake was centred in Canterbury, are badly affected by the shake.

There are no initial reports of injuries or fatalities.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat from Monday's quake.
