Police investigation underway after reported rape of young Irish teen on holiday

Spanish police are investigating reports that a young Irish teen was sexually assaulted while holidaying in the popular tourist island of Tenerife.

The incident is believed to have taken place last Thursday, on a beach near the Playa de las Americas resort in the southwest of the island.

Website is reporting that she was attacked by what Spanish police described as "an individual of caucasian appearance", who may be a tourist.

It is understood that the young girl went to the beach area with her brother but became separated from him before the alleged incident.

The teen - who Spanish media report is just 13-years-old - later received medical attention at a hospital in the locality.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it "does not comment on such cases, given their sensitive nature".
