The PSNI believe that a device was fired or thrown at a Land Rover which was patrolling the New Lodge area of Belfast on Tuesday night.

The incident happened at around 10.30pm in the Victoria Parade area.

Homes in Duncairn Parade had to be evacuated with families seeking refuge in the local community centre.

Nobody was hurt in the attack.

Army bomb experts were called to the scene to investigate.

Residents described how they heard a loud bang and saw a flash of light.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “We believe a device may have been thrown or fired at a patrol but did not make contact. As part of this operation we have had to ask a number of residents to leave their home as a necessary safety precaution

“North Queen Street community centre has been opened to facilitate those affected.

“We apologise for the disruption, unfortunately it is unavoidable.

“Our first priority is to have the area thoroughly checked and that it is safe for local people.”
