A display plane crashed at a festival in England this afternoon.

The tragic incident happened at the CarFest event being held at Oulton Park in Cheshire.

The incident happened in front of hundreds of shocked spectators.

Several witnesses have posted pictures of the crash on Twitter.  One witness said: “Feel sick. I just witnessed a plane crash at CarFest. Literally flew over my head and blew up on a ball of flames in a field.

The plane was believed to be part of the Gnat Display team. An air ambulance arrived at the scene in the last few minutes.

Another witness said: “Sat watching the air ambulance and hoping there's a chance the pilot is ok. Just horrible.”

The festival, which is being hosted by broadcaster Chris Evan, features car displays, music, entertainment and family fun. He tweeted: “I am very sad to announce there has been a serious air incident at CarFest North off site. The emergency services are in attendance.”
