The Rotunda hospital welcomed the first baby of the New Year one second after midnight, and his twin joined him six minutes later.

The mother and babies are recovering well but have asked for privacy at this time.

And not too far away the National Maternity Hospital welcomed Arlo River Elias Kenny into the world - 49 seconds later.

Delighted parents Elton Rooney (40) and Stacy Kenny from Clonsilla in Dublin are thrilled to have their “perfect” baby boy after an emergency caesarean section.

“It was getting nearer and nearer to midnight and we were looking at the clock thinking, is this going to happen – I couldn’t care less if didn’t. And then it was a quarter to. And I said ‘what do you think can we do this?’ yeah it’s on the cards,” said Mr Rooney.

Arlo might have been called Slash if not for Ms Kenny’s intervention, however their other son is called after Guns N’ Roses lead singer Axl Rose. Axel is 3-years-old.

Arlo’s name is a tribute to River Phoenix and Walt Disney - whose middle name is Elias.

Baby Molly arrived in the first 19 minutes of the New Year as well, but in the National Maternity Hospital.

The couple Judy (34) and John (37) Turley had a “hectic year”, as they had got married in 2016.

Molly is 4.3kg and the parents praised the midwives in the Rotunda for their help and kindness.

Meanwhile, the Coombe Hospital in Dublin had their first arrival of the new year at 7:45am this morning with a baby boy.

Parents Rose and Ben Waldron from Kilcock, Co Kildare have yet to pick a name.

It's the second child for the couple and he weighed in at a healthy 7lb 12 ounces.

In Cork, the first arrival came in at five minutes past one.

The baby boy and mother Alison McGee are said to be doing well.
