A number of people were rescued this morning after a two cars entered the River Liffey.

Emergency services were called to a scene in Celbridge, Co Kildare early today.

Locals reported hearing sirens and a helicopter in the area as the rescue unfolded.

Senior sources said that gardai were pursuing a number of vehicles before the cars entered the water in Celbridge.

It is believed that officers from Dublin were following up on reports of a burglary.

Dramatic pictures were posted online by the Tallaght ambulance service who wrote: "Busy night with two cars in River Liffey @ Celbridge (no serious injuries) Tallaght, Naas & Dunshaughlin @ scene."
