Pat Kenny - Joe O'Reilly was popping pills before Late Late interview
Pat Kenny has revealed that wife killer Joe O'Reilly was popping pills before his now infamous appearance on the Late Late Show in 2004.
Speaking to the Irish Daily Star today, the former Late Late Show host spoke about the night in 2004 when O'Reilly and Rachel's mother Rose Callaly went on the programme to appeal for information about her murder.
Kenny told the paper how the show's hospitality host spotted O'Reilly taking medication before the interview.
"He was taking some medication," said the Newstalk presenter.
"Our hospitality noticed he was taking pills from a pill bottle and, again, if someone was having that kind of bereavement, they would be so shattered they would need something just to get on with it.
"I don't know what the prescription medicine was," he added. "So you tend to make all these sort of allowances."
Kenny also says that he thought it was odd that O'Reilly left early after the show while the Callay family stayed around to speak to him later.
Kenny says that O'Reilly came across as "plausible" but he noted it was a "strange night" and that O'Reilly did act "odd".
O’Reilly was found guilty in 2007 by a jury at the Central Criminal Court of the murder of his wife at their home in the Naul, Co Dublin, on October 4th, 2004.
He was jailed for life.
Ms O’Reilly’s badly beaten body was found in the bedroom of her home by her mother.
O’Reilly later lost an appeal against his conviction and in May 2015 the Court of Appeal refused his application to have his conviction declared a miscarriage of justice.
