Paddy Power have announced that Donald Trump's win cost them €4m, and that is on top of paying out €900,000 on a Hillary Clinton win three weeks ago.

As Trump floundered in the polls, the bookie took the decision to give Clinton backers their win but for once the publicity stunt has backfired for the Irish firm.

Féilim Mac An Iomaire, a spokesperson for Paddy Power, said “We’re in the business of making predictions and decided to put our neck on the line by paying out early on Hillary Clinton, but boy did we get it wrong. We’ve been well and truly thumped by Trump with his victory leaving us with the biggest political payout in the company’s history and some very, very expensive egg on our faces.”

Of course, they never stay down for too long and they immediately announced a number of Trump specials including placing him at 4/1 to be re-elected in 2020, 20/1 to build a Mexican border wall and 100/1 to turn the White House gold.
