Over €500,000 spent on gardening at Garda stations
More than €500,000 was spent on maintaining the gardens at Garda stations between 2012 and 2014.
Today's Star has details of the spend that were released under a Freedom of Information Act request.
The figures show that €525,410.25 was spent on landscaping and garden maintenance at the county's Garda stations between 2012 and 2014.
During the same period 139 stations were closed, at a reported saving of €556,000 a year.
Fianna Fail TD Colm Keaveney called the spend 'scandalous'.
'This is an insult to thousands of people in rural communities who have been left vulnerable and afraid since the closure of their local Garda stations, which were shut down on the basis of cost.
'We now learn that a modest re-prioritisation of resources from gardening to policing could have kept up to 44 of these stations open.
'It is scandalous that over half a million euro can be spent pruning roses and watering hanging baskets, while so many people in remote areas are left unguarded.'
