ONE Direction's Zayn Malik has quit the One Direction tour due to stress.

And bookies have slashed odds on the band – who plays Dublin’s 3 Arena in October – splitting up or Zayn to just the band.

A statement released on behalf of the band, read: "Zayn has been signed off with stress and is flying back to the UK to recuperate. The band wish him well and will continue with their performances in Manila and Jakarta."

The announcement comes after the singer was forced to defend himself online and express his love for his Little Mix fiancée Perrie Edwards after pictures emerged of him apparently close to another woman.

Last night he wrote on to his 14 million Twitter followers: "I'm 22 years old... I love a girl named Perrie Edwards. And there's a lot of jealous f***s in this world I'm sorry for what it looks like x."

On Wednesday the star told his 14.1 million Twitter followers: "I'm 22 years old ... I love a girl named Perrie Edwards. And there's a lot of jealous f***s in this world I'm sorry for what it looks like x"

Perrie (21) is a member of the girl group Little Mix and the pair met on The X Factor in 2011. They got engaged in August 2013.

One Direction are due to perform in Manila on March 21 and 22 as part of their On The Road Again tour.

Earlier it was reported earlier that Malik and bandmate Louis Tomlinson could face fines of thousands of pounds if they are caught using or promoting illegal drugs during the concerts in the Philippines.

The country's Bureau of Immigration said the pair had been asked to post bonds of more than E4000 each which will be forfeited if they fall foul of the regulations. Both men featured in a video, widely reported on last year, in which they shown allegedly smoking cannabis and joking about drug use.

With One Direction stories dominating the headlines, band member Liam Payne tweeted on Thursday: "What a day."

Mullingar man Niall Horan first started out on his road to fame when he entered X Factor auditions in Dublin five years ago, leading to the formation of One Direction on the show.

The X Factor will return for auditions in Croke Park on April 8 and 9, although only with producers in attendance.
