Victim's car may have been driving the wrong way up the M1

A 48-year-old man has died following a three-car collision on the M1 motorway last night.

Preliminary indications are that the man's car may have been travelling southbound on the northbound carriageway.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses who have not yet spoken to them, to make contact.

The man was killed after his car collided on the M1 northbound between junctions 15 and 16 near Castlebellingham.

The three vehicles collided at about 10.30pm and a woman, also in her 40s, who was driving one of the other cars, was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital with serious injuries.

A passenger and the driver of the third car are not believed to have sustained serious injuries but were taken to hospital for treatment.

Diversions are currently in place in the area and a technical examination is taking place this morning.
