One confirmed dead, one other in critical condition following industrial accident in Dublin

One person has been confirmed dead following a serious industrial accident in north Dublin.

Another man has been rushed to hospital in critical condition, Gardai have confirmed. 

Emergency services are currently at the scene of the incident in Portmarnock.

Three units of the Dublin Fire Brigades and three ambulance have been called to the area, which is believed to be in Drumnigh Woods in Portmarnock.

The units responded to a call out before 3pm this afternoon. 

It is reported the two men were overcome with fumes while working in a sewer in the suburb. 

According to an earlier statement from the Health and Safety Authority, the two men were killed in the accident.

However, one of the men is understood to have been rushed to Beaumont Hospital in critical condition by emergency services. 

They are employees of a company called Draintech and were at work in the confined space when the incident occurred.

It is also reported three emergency services personnel at the scene were taken ill and have been transferred to hospital as a precaution. 

Fine Gael TD Alan Farrell, a Fingal representative and former mayor, tweeted that his thoughts were with those involved. 

Two inspectors from the HSA have been sent to the scene and an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The inquiries are centring on whether the men inhaled lethal fumes while working in underground pipes and sewerage systems.
