Viable pipe bomb found in Belfast alert

The police have discovered a viable pipe bomb in West Belfast.

The device was found during a security alert in the Andersonstown Crescent area of the city in the early hours of this morning.

The suspicious object was reported at around 12.30am and a number of homes had to be evacuated and roads closed.

After the device was examined it was declared a viable device by police and made safe before being taken away for further examination. 

Residents were able to return to their homes at around 3.30am.
