Three men have been arrested by detectives investigating the murder of former IRA man Kevin McGuigan.

Suspects aged 41, 44 and 53 were detained today in the Greater Belfast area, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said.

Mr McGuigan Snr was shot dead at his home in east Belfast last week.

Detective Chief Inspector John McVea said: "Detectives from Serious Crime Branch investigating the murder of Kevin McGuigan in the Short Strand area of Belfast on 12th August have arrested three men.

"The men, aged 53, 44 and 41 were arrested at various locations in the Greater Belfast area this morning. All three have now been taken to the Serious Crime Suite for questioning."

The victim, 53, was murdered at his home at Comber Court in the Short Strand last Wednesday.

The father-of-nine was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in West Belfast but died a short time later.

Requiem Mass for Mr McGuigan will be held at St Matthew's Church in Belfast at midday.

He will be buried in the City Cemetery.
