Teen killed in stolen van crash on the M1

A 17-year-old has died in a crash involving a stolen van which had been stolen in the Republic of Ireland.

The crash happened at around 10.50pm on Wednesday night when the van hit a barrier at the junction of Blaris and Saintfield near Sprucefield shopping centre.

The PSNI think the van was stolen from the Irish Republic earlier in the evening.

They have appealed for information on a red Ford Mondeo which they believe had been travelling with the van from the Lagmore area of West Belfast.

A spokesperson for the PSNI Collision Investigation Unit said: “We would like to hear from anyone who saw either the silver Transit Van or the Modeo car on the M1 or A1 prior to the time of the collision. The number to call is 101.

“I would also like to thank the public at this time for their assistance and patience at the scene last night, particularly those who provided help prior to the arrival of emergency services and those who reported the collision and gave their accounts to the responding officers.”
