A man who died in a microlight crash in Newtownards on Tuesday has been named as Stephen McNight.

Mr McNight, from Hillsborough in County Down, was the only person in the two-seater aircraft.

The victim, in his 60s, was taken to the Ulster Hospital after the microlight crashed just off the runway at the Newtownards airstrip, which is run by the Ulster Flying Club, just before 11.30am.

He later died from his injuries.

A spokesperson from the PSNI said: "Air Accident Investigation Branch have been informed and will be the lead agency in this investigation."

Gerry Snodden, who had landed his own aircraft just before the crash, said: “It’s a shock to all of us in Newtownards.

"This is the first accident that has happened in Newtownards for quite some time.”
