Masked men attack victim with knife and a bat

A 23-year-old man has been attacked by a masked gang with a knife and a bat in south Belfast.

The assault happened in the Roden Street area last night.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “It was reported that at approximately 11.30pm as the injured party was walking along Roden Street towards Roden Pass with two other people, a black BMW pulled up beside them. The five male occupants of the car alighted from the vehicle and two of them assaulted the man with what is believed to be a knife and a bat. All of the males in the vehicle were wearing dark clothing and black masks.

"The man sustained an injury to the back of his head and his shoulder. He was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this assault or the black BMW to contact Police at Woodbourne PSNI Station on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 1519 03/05/16. Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Two people were also reported to be left badly shaken during the incident.
