Man dies after microlight aircraft crash in Down

A man has died after a microlight aircraft crashed in Northern Ireland, police said.

The incident happened at Newtownards airfield at 11.25am, according to a Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) spokesman.

Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Inspector Mark Roberts said: "Police and other emergency services are dealing with an incident at Newtownards Airfield.

"Our set emergency protocols are in place and we will provide an update in due course."

PSNI Inspector Glenn Campbell said: "Police can confirm that a man has died following an incident involving a light aircraft at Newtownards Airfield shortly before 11.30am this morning, Tuesday April 7.

"Air Accident Investigation Branch have been informed and will be the lead agency in this investigation."
