The police have found a suspected gun during the search of a building site in west Belfast.

The item was seized this morning just after 9am in the Whiterock Close area.

During the search, Whiterock Close was closed to traffic while both the Whiterock Leisure Centre and Whiterock Community Centre were evacuated.

The suspected firearm was recovered and taken away for further examination.

The road and buildings have since been reopened.

Inspector Roy Burnside said: "I would appeal to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in this area to contact Woodbourne Police Station on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 180 of 13/10/16. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."
