A Derry man who was savagely beaten and left in a vegatative stae in 2006 has died in hospital this morning.

The civil servant was attacked by up to 15 men at a barbecue in Waterside in 2006 and he never regained consciousness.

A man named Daryl Proctor was convicted for the assault and sentenced to 12 years in prison. He was released in February this year.

McCauley had two heart attacks on the way to hospital after the attack and he also suffered a brain haemorrhage and a fractured skull.

He remained in a vegatative state since the attack.

McCauley's case was back in the news last year when PSNI Chief Constable George Hamilton apologised to the family for not bringing more people to justice for the attack.
