Ballygowan security alert was 'hoax' say police

A security alert in Ballygowan has been declared a hoax.

Shortly after midnight police were called to examine a suspicious object in the Meadow Road area.

Houses had to be evacuated during the alert.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Shortly after midnight Police dealt with a suspicious object in the Meadow Road area of Ballygowan. 

"Following examination it was declared an elaborate hoax.

"A number of houses were evacuated during this security alert. Residents were allowed back into their homes at approximately 6.30am."

The police have asked for anyone with information to contact them on their non-emergency number, 101.
