It will be next weekend before weather conditions improve, latest forecasts suggest.

Strong winds swept the country yesterday and overnight and it looks like there will be more wintry showers in the days and nights to come.

It will be a “very cold” night according to Met Éireann, with occasional hail, sleet and snow showers in western and northern counties, and some accumulations likely.

The sleet and snow showers will be more scattered elsewhere, and there will be some frost and ice patches by morning.

While tomorrow will be mostly dry in some parts of the east and the Midlands – heavy rain, hail, sleet and snow showers will spread from the west in the afternoon.

There’ll also be isolated thunder storms.

There will be similar conditions on Monday night while on Tuesday there will be widespread wintry showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow in a gale force west/north-west wind.

By mid-week, the wintry weather will ease a little bit as we head into the weekend.
