An Ulsterbus has crashed through a well on the Portaferry road outside Newtownards before landing on a beach and becoming submerged in Strangford Lough.

The driver is currently being assessed in hospital and there were no passengers on the bus at the time.

Reports suggest the bus may have skidded on surface water on the road before crashing through the wall and into Strangford Lough at around 6.30am.

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency has tasked officers to the crash to investigate whether or not there is a risk of pollution.

The road is currently closed and Translink has said that an investigation is underway.
