Two men have been arrested in Liverpool following an assault on an Irishman who has been left fighting for his life.

Merseyside Police said two men, aged 19, presented themselves at the station today in connection to the assault on the 24-year-old in Liverpool city centre early Saturday morning.

The Irish man is believed to be in a critical condition following the attack.

Merseyside Police said emergency services attended the scene in the Concert Square are at about 2.20am.

The Irishman was discovered with a head injury in an alleyway between Fleet Street and Seel Street.

They believe the victim was assaulted following an altercation with two other men, near the Walkabout bar and Level nightclub in the city.

Detective Inspector Matthew Kerr said it was "a nasty attack on a man who had been enjoying a night out".

"Having viewed CCTV from the area we would also urge three women who were in the vicinity of the alleyway at this time to also get in touch as we believe they will have information vital to our investigation."
