The Late Late Joe

Backstage before the Late Late Show on Friday night the voice of Elvis Presley in full flight singing You Gave Me A Mountain is blasting from Ryan Tubridy’s dressing room.

The clock is counting down to the opening showpiece: Ireland’s own Elvis - the late Joe Dolan - performing from the grave with country superstar Nathan Carter and the RTE Concert Orchestra.

In a near-by dressing room, Joe’s 82-year-old brother, Ben, his trumpet player Frankie McDonald and their life-time manager Seamus Casey, are reminiscing about the crazy days of the Irish showband scene.

The genial Casey said that in one year alone in the 1960s Joe and the band played to nearly half a million fans in Ireland – or the equivalent of six Croke Park gigs!

Nearly nine years since his shock death on St Stephen’s Day 2007, Joe is still a star attraction.
