UPDATE: Teenage boy dies after being thrown from horse into flooded river

A teenage boy who was thrown from a horse into a flooded river in Glanmire, Co Cork has died.

The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at Cork University Hospital this morning.
 
The boy, who is believed to have been from Cork city, was riding a horse on the banks of the Glashaboy river near John O'Callaghan Park when he was thrown from the animal into the water.
 
The alarm was raised by two of the boy’s friends who were with him.
 
Gardaí, firefighters and emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene, but the boy is understood to have been the water for a significant time before he was located.
