There were heartbreaking scenes at the marina on the Shannon yesterday as family and friends left floral tributes to the hero wife who drowned trying to save her husband.

The bodies of Frank Dunne (39), from Malahide in Co. Dublin, and his wife Alexandra Malkin Dunne, who is aged in her 30s and originally from Britain, were recovered from the water at Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim, on Friday afternoon.

Locals say Alexandra dived into the river in a bid to save Frank after he accidentally slipped and fell while they were returning to their rented cruiser following a night out.

Frank’s body was recovered at 2pm on Friday afternoon close to the boat that he had rented out earlier in the week for a romantic break with his wife.

Alexandra was found further away by gardaí after a family member raised the alarm after failing to make contact with the couple.

They were last seen having a meal in a local restaurant on Wednesday night.

Councillor Enda Stenson said locals who had gathered yesterday for a Bank of Ireland Enterprise event were in shock.

“There is an air of gloom here today,” he said. “The couple had family connections here in the town, where everybody knows everyone. Although the River Shannon can be treacherous it’s not all that common a tragedy like this happens, so it’s a real shock.”
