A surfer has been airlifted to hospital after injuring himself off the Clare coast.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Ballard Bay, Doonbeg, at around 9.45am this morning.

The Kilkee Coastguard responded to the alert along with a HSE ambulance and the Shannon-based Rescue 115 helicopter.

The man in his 30s was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick with a suspected fractured thighbone.

He sustained the injury while surfing a world-famous wave called Riley’s, the Kilkee Coastguard said.
