THE Sky News journalist who referred to Irish actress Saoirse Ronan as “one of ours” has refused to back down and has even said that labelling her as British is “a compliment”.

Reporter Richard Suchet made the comment on Friday during a news report on the Bafta nominations, with Ronan being shortlisted for best Leading Actress in a film for her role in Brooklyn.

While listing the category nominations, he said: “I think we can take Saoirse Ronan as one of ours.”

The remark prompted a barrage of activity on Twitter, with many pointing out that Ronan is in fact Irish and not British.

But in a response to a tweet from @RTE_TEN, Suchet said: “She’s from the British Isles & whether you like it or not, Brits will be willing her to win.”

He added in a later tweet on the thread: “But many Brits will see her as one of their own. It’s a consequence of geography. A compliment I’d say.”
