Shots fired at armed Gardai this morning

Gardai attempted to stop a vehicle at approximately 1am at Clonmoyle, Rathangan in Co Kildare.

Shots were fired at the armed gardai.

Officers pursued the car and the two men, both aged in their early twenties, were arrested a short distance away.

Gardai did not return fire during the incident and a firearm was recovered at the scene.

Nobody was injured.

Two men were arrested after the incident.

Both men are detained at Leixlip Garda Station under Section 30, of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939/1998. They can be detained for a period of up to 72 hours.

The scene at Clonmoyle between Rathangan and Monasterevin, Co. Kildare has been sealed off and local diversions are in place.
