Santa Train grinds to a halt

Dublin commuters were left stranded for up to ninety minutes this afternoon - after Santa’s steam train broke down.

It was a case of ho ho hum for DART users when a special family steam training carrying Mr Claus drew to a halt on the tracks.

The train, travelling from Dublin to Greystones, had sold out weeks in advance and was packed with families. The two-hour journey features an on-board visit from Santa and presents for children plug photo opportunities with the man himself.

But the busy Dublin commuter rail belt  -  being used by thousands of shoppers in the run-up to Christmas – ground to a halt when the vintage train experienced technical difficulties, blocking the busy track.

Red-faced Iarnrod Eireann chiefs even posted a picture on twitter of Santa being quizzed by officials about the incident.

It was the first special Santa railway trip of the season and the trains have proved to be a huge hit with families and young children. Services were restored following a ninety minute delay.
