Priest 'chased cathedral burglar through streets of Newry'

A court has been told that a priest chased an alleged burglar through the streets of Newry.

Prosecutors told the HIgh Court that the alleged burglar was pursued by a parish priest from Newry Cathedral.

£2.50 and a bunch of keys was stolen.

They said the priest chased the intruder through Newry bus station where the part of the incident was reportedly picked up by CCTV.

James McDonagh, 28, was later arrested and charged with burglary.

However, neither the priest or an independent witness were able to single out Mr McDonagh in an identification process.

Mr McDonagh's defence argued that there was a contradiction between the priest's description of the burglar and his client's appearance.

He also argued that the police may have had a preconceived opinion on Mr McDonagh as they had already stopped him earlier that day.

However, the judge refused bail, saying: "I don't think there's a change of circumstances in this case."
