A post mortem examination is due on the body of an inmate who was stabbed to death in Cork prison yesterday evening.

Graham Johnson (41) was stabbed in the chest by another inmate as he was working in the kitchen at around 5pm.

Gardaí are conducting a murder investigation and will interview inmates and prison staff.

A violent heroin addict who is in his 30s has been isolated from the general prison population.

The Prison Service says it will carry out a review at Cork Prison and the Director of Prisons will conduct an investigation.

The kitchen area at Cork prison where the fatal attack took place remains sealed off today.
