The joint funeral of Ashley Donohoe and Olivia Burke took place in St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cotati, California today.

Following the shock and heartbreak of the last week, today the families who lost relatives in the Berkeley balcony tragedy began the process of laying their loved ones to rest.

A funeral mass was held today for cousins Ashley Donohoe, from Rohnert Park in California and Olivia Burke from Foxrock in the town of Cotati, about a 90-minute drive from Berkeley.

Just as at last night's vigil in Oakland for the other four victims of the tragedy, Eimear Walsh, Nick Schuster, Lorcán Miller and Eoghan Culligan, a huge crowd of locals, Irish emigrants and J1 visa holders packed into St Joseph's Catholic Church to pay their final respects.

Ashley will be laid to rest in nearby Sonoma while Olivia will be flown home to Dublin tomorrow.

Aer Lingus will fly the remains of the other four who lost their lives this week later this evening and they are expected to arrive back in Ireland with their families at 11.30am Sunday morning.
