Pavee Point has launched an online campaign urging the Taoiseach to ensure all halting sites around the country are safe.

The group which, represents travellers and the Roma community, has said an urgent fire safety assessment of all accommodation is required.

The call follows the devastating Carrickmines fire in which ten people, including an infant, lost their lives.

The victims will be laid to rest this week.

Co-Director of Pavee Point Martin Collins has said it is also important residents raise any issues with their local authority.

“There is a database, I mean local authorities and the Department of the Environment as the lead agency, I mean they have a database of all traveller accommodation right across the country,” Mr Collins said.

“But yes, traveller organisations at a local level should also come forward and say: ‘hey, look there is a site in our area and we don’t feel it is being properly maintained or managed and we don’t feel it meets the health and safety requirements, you need to have a look at this site’”
