One of the country’s most dangerous sex offenders is back on the streets this week, sparking an alert to Garda stations in his native Cork.

John English (38), from Cork, is one of Ireland’s most feared sex offenders.

The notorious rapist was sent back to jail earlier this year for not complying with the conditions of release from prison on an 18-year sentence for the violent rape of an Australian woman he met in a pub in Cork City in 2002.

At his sentencing at the age of 26, the court was told the former barber had 27 previous convictions, four of them relating to attacks on women.

The trial heard that 11 days after the brutal rape of the Australian tourist in the grounds of University College Cork, English falsely imprisoned and assaulted two women in separate incidents in Cork. The court heard he was first convicted of assaulting a woman when he was aged 15.

An alert was issued to Garda stations in Cork this week warning that the violent sex offender was a danger to women. The convicted rapist was previously described by Mr Justice Barry White as “a danger and a menace to society” and “a serious threat to the women of Cork”.
