Tragedy struck off the Co Wexford coast last night when one man died and another nine were rescued as their boat capsized.

The ten were on-board the vessel when the alarm was raised shortly before 11.30pm after they failed to return to shore.

It is understood they were in the water for several hours before being rescued.

All of them were wearing life jackets.

The scene was attended by the Fethard-on-Sea and Kilmore Quay life boats and coast guard units out of Kilmore Quay and Dunmore East as well as a small passenger ferry.

The Waterford-based coast guard helicopter also attended the scene, and transferred one man to University Hospital Waterford, where he was later pronounced dead.

The other nine people were transferred by road to Wexford General Hospital.
