Man held over mugging of three schoolboys
Gardaí in Limerick have arrested a man in connection with the mugging of three schoolchildren in Limerick city this morning.
The sinister incident took place as three teenage boys were walking to school between Lee Estate and Athlunkard Boat Club at approximately 8.30am Monday morning when they were approached by a man.
According to gardaí, the man asked the boys for a mobile phone before leaving with the device.
He is also said to have threatened them not to contact gardaí.
None of the victims, believed to be aged 15 and 16, were injured during the incident.
Investigating officers cordoned off the area this morning and conducted a search of the scene.
A man in his 20s, from the Ballinacurra Weston part of the city, was arrested over the incident, and is currently being held at Mayorstone Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
A garda source revealed to Independent.ie that a young female was mugged on Sunday night in Grove Island, Corbally –close to the scene of this morning's mugging.
Her phone was reportedly stolen in similar fashion, after a man requested to make a phone call on the victim’s device.
