Man held in Limerick Garda station after serious assault on a woman

A 28-year-old man has been arrested and is being detained at Henry Street Garda station in Limerick after a woman was seriously injured in an assault overnight.

The man is being held under section four of the Criminal Justice Act asgardai in the city investigate the attack.

Gardaí received a report of a disturbance at a property at Hassetts Villas, Thomondgate, at about 12.40am.

When they entered the property they found a woman (37) with serious injuries to her body, possibly stab wounds.

An ambulance was called and the woman was taken to University Hospital Limerick. Her condition is described as critical but stable.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination.
