A man who decapitated his girlfriend and her two dogs before mutilating himself has been arrested in the US city of Phoenix in Arizona.

Police had been called to the property on previous occasions as the couple involved had a history of domestic violence.

The suspect, a 43-year-old man, had a history of mental health problems and had recently checked out of a mental health facility.

His neighbour went to the house to check on him after he had not heard from him in 24 hours.

The neighbour then discovered the horrific scene, after the suspect answered the door covered in blood.

The unidentified 43-year-old had apparently amputated his left arm and gouged out his right eye.

“He had been severely injured. It appears he had self-amputated his left arm from below the elbow,” Sgt. Trent Crump told the Daily News.

Police officers found the suspect in front of the home and the decapitated body of 49-year-old Trina Heisch inside a walk-in closet. The bodies of two dogs, each decapitated, were found inside as well in the 5100 block of North 13th Place.

The suspect told police at the scene he had killed three members of his family – however investigators believe he may have been referring to the two dogs as family members, as there was only one human victim inside the home.

The man remains in hospital recovering from his injuries, however it is expected he will survive.
