The Irish Paralympian whose prosthetic leg was stolen last weekend is to be fitted for a new ‘blade’ today.

Callous thieves stole Co Monaghan athlete Shane McLaughlin’s unique leg between the hours of 9pm on Friday and 5am on Saturday morning from a car outside his house, and he was desperate to track it down – as his dreams of winning at an athletics meeting  in Berlin next week were ruined by the theft.

However, Shane will be fitted with a new one today at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire.

Shane will have to spend time ‘getting to know’ his new leg however, as it takes some time to adjust according to experts.

But at least his dream of winning is still alive.

People have reacted with shock at the theft – as his original blade is of no use to anyone else.
