A couple from Northern Ireland have drowned while on holiday in South Africa.

John (28) and Lynette (26) Rodgers, from Holywood in County Down, were found on a beach at Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape on Friday.

Efforts were made to resuscitate them, but they were declared dead at the scene.

A local man raised the alarm after fining a man's body at around 6pm.

Two women discovered Lynette's body later, around 200 metres from the John's.

It is understood that the pair had just arrived at the resort and had gone for a swim.

Search and rescue teams said that conditions at the time were dangerous.

A spokesperson for South Africa's National Sea Rescue Institute said: “Sea conditions were rough with strong rip-currents in the vicinity. Police have opened an inquest docket and although no foul play is suspected the deaths are being investigated.

“The bodies have been handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services.

“British authorities are assisting with family abroad. The emergency services and those involved have expressed sincerest condolences.”

The families of the deceased have been informed.

A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said: "We are providing assistance to both families at this extremely difficult time, and will remain in contact with local authorities."
