Investigations continue into tragic drowning deaths of two people in Galway
Investigations are continuing into the tragic drowning deaths of two people in separate incidents in Galway yesterday afternoon.
The body of a woman was recovered from Galway harbour after emergency services received a call from a passerby at around 2.30pm.
The woman, aged in her 40s or 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A short time later a young man died after he got into difficulties while swimming in the River Corrib.
Emergency services were called to the scene, just north of the city centre, at around 2.30pm.
The man (19) had been swimming with friends and the alarm was raised when others on the riverbank saw him get into difficulties.
The Shannon based 115 rescue helicopter, gardaí, fire service personnel and paramedics carried out a search operation along with members of the Galway sub aqua club.
The man was found just after 4pm and taken ashore.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to University Hospital Galway, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.
It is understood he was from the area.
