'He is strong and he is a fighter' says father of Irishman hospitalised after accident in Portugal
The distraught father of an Irishman fighting for his life after a fall in Portugal has described his son as a “fighter”.
Niall Dennehy, a Cork musician, suffered serious injuries after reportedly tripping and falling into a swimming pool, hitting his head.
His friends, who were with him at the time, immediately went to his aid.
Niall suffered severe head injuries and was taken to hospital and placed in an induced coma by doctors.
His father Con, who immediately flew to Portugal to be at this son’s side, said: “As soon as it is possible we will get him home to Cork for further treatment.
“In the meantime we are just praying that he will make a full recovery," he told the Evening Echo.
“He is strong and a fighter and we hope that we may get home within the coming week.
“But we know it will be a long and slow road and we will do whatever the doctors recommend.”
Con said said they were very aware that the thoughts and prayers of many people in Ireland are with them and they are grateful for the support.
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the family
