Parents in the north of Ireland are urged to be on alert after the attempted abduction of a nine-year-old girl.

At around 4.15pm yesterday afternoon a white van with three men inside approached the girl as she walked near the Creggan library in Derry City.

One of the men asked the girl to get inside the van.

The girl refused to and immediately ran home.

Creggan library is just a few hundred yards from Holy child Primary School - one of many schools in the Creggan estate.

The police are currently investigating the incident and have urged parents to be vigilant.

A PSNI spokesperson said the young "did exactly the right thing" by running home and telling her parents.
