Falling snow has added to recent chaotic weather conditions as property owners along the River Shannon face an anxious wait with flood waters threatening to wreak havoc yet again.

Snowfall has been reported in Co Mayo as well as in parts of the Midlands, with heavy snow showers also reported in the North.

Water levels on the River Shannon near Athlone rose four centimetres on Friday.

The ESB has said it will increase the flow of water from the Parteen Weir as the river continues to rise. The ESB said they have had to increase the flow due to rising water coming from Lough Derg.

A spokesperson said they had no option but to increase the flow through the weir.

In Dublin, an M1 motorway slip road flooded on Saturday and left motorists stuck in their cars.

The Dublin fire brigade helped rescue a motorist stuck on the junction 5 slip road.

Defence Minister Simon Coveney has assured those in the worst-affected area that  Army units with high-axle trucks would be deployed in support of emergency services.

"All State agencies will do everything they can to protect people and property over the coming days," he said.
