BREAKING: Carrickfergus sledgehammer attack victim had been previously 'warned by UDA'

The Sunday World understands that a man who was beaten with baseball bats and a sledgehammer yesterday evening had been given a warning by loyalist paramilitaries.

Four masked men forced their way into  the house in the Rosebrook Avenue area just before 9pm.

A source in Carrickfergus said the 39-year-old man had been 'warned' some years ago by loyalist paramilitaries.

They said: "He was given a warning a few years ago by the UDA and told to keep his head down."

Detective Constable Michael Sweeney said: “I would ask anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area, or who knows anything about this incident, to contact detectives at Larne Police Station on the non emergency number 101.

"Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
